Meet Janice Coppola: Clarinetist Extraordinaire
Janice Coppola is a classically trained clarinetist who holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Although Janice began her studies in classical music, her fluency in jazz led to solo performances of the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as guest soloist under the direction of Marvin Hamlisch. She has also been a soloist with the River City Brass Band performing music of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. In 2019, Janice was in the Pittsburgh Public Theater production of "Indecent" as an actor/musician. Janice performs regularly as a chamber musician exploring the vast repertoire for winds and strings, and as a klezmer musician with her band KleZlectic who perform klezmer, jazz, pop and folk music of eastern Europe. She has made several CD's with different groups in the region and currently has a website janicecoppola.com featuring original dance pieces with her band.
As a teacher, Janice draws from years of experience studying with two former Daniel Bonade students, as well as clarinetists from various schools of orchestral and small ensemble playing. Janice has succeeded in winning various competitions over the years and enjoys helping students prepare for auditions and/or performances. As well, Janice has experience teaching clarinet to students age 6 to 64 and modifies the structure of lessons to meet the needs of the student. Janice has also studied jazz and klezmer music on the clarinet and has much to share with the interested student. Janice is excellent at helping students learn to compose their own pieces, learn to improvise, and learn about performing different styles of folk music from Eastern Europe. Janice teaches clarinet, bass clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone and piano and is a current instructor of all these instruments with Johnstonbaugh Music Centre and Pittsburgh School of the Arts.

This is not a KleZlectic performance but I am performing the Paul Schoenfeld Klezmer Sonatina for clarinet and piano. You must register to enter the concert, but it is free! Register at tuesdaymusicalclub.org under Events.
Monday October 5 at noon at the Frank Sarris Public Library 35 North Jefferson Avenue in Canonsburg, PA. Free Parking in the Murdock Street parking lot. This is a trio with oboe, clarinet and viola performing Randall Thompson's Suite and other American favorites.
Tuesday October 13 at 1 p.m. at Beit Kulanu Temple corner of Fifth Avenue and Morewood in Shadyside, Pittsburgh. Tuesday Musical Club monthly concert. Saturday October 24 private klezmer event in Morgantown, WV
Sunday October 25 KleZlectic! will perform at the Saxonburg Memorial Church in Saxonburg, PA which is on 100 W Main Street 16056. The concert will begin at 4 and end around 5:30. All ages welcome and no one is required to sit during the concert!
Friday October 30 KleZlectic will be a part of the Friday Shabbat with dinner prior to event. More info to come!
Thurday December 10 KleZlectic will once again perform for the Jewish Residential Service's annual Hanukkah party.
Saturday December 12 at the Main Library in Oakland, Pittsburgh, KleZlectic will perform 2 - 3 p.m. celebrating Hanukkah and all that is klezmer! Join us for a fun-filled afternoon in a rockin' part of our lovely city with so much to do on a Saturday afternoon!
